Heart and Stroke Month Awareness
Not only is February the month for Valentines Day, it’s also Heart and Stroke Month!
Did you know that in the last two decades, drugs spent to treat cardiovascular diseases in Canada increased by 200% with no sign of waning in the near future. Fortunately, this is mediated at least in part by our universal healthcare insurance, but this is not the case in many places around the world!
By 2020, it’s predicted that cardiovascular diseases will become the major cause of morbidity and mortality in most developing countries. This is particularly difficult for countries with limited access to affordable and effective treatments.
The World Health Organization is starting groups such as Global Hearts Initiative to help focus efforts in countries in greater need. Here in Canada, we have excellent organizations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation that have been doing life-saving research for numerous decades.
If interested, Shoppers Drug Mart is doing a limited time donation match for the Heart and Stroke Foundation!
