Antimicrobial Resistance & Pharmacists' Role in Antimicrobial Stewardship
As future pharmacists, we all have a role to play in antimicrobial stewardship. A number of us may also work one day in a field that will bring new and innovative antimicrobials into market. A new report published by the World Health Organization focuses on the topic of antibiotic resistance and how the lack of new antibiotics is threatening global efforts to contain drug-resistant infections. Public and private investment for the development of treatment for highly resistant bacteria is crucial as we are running out of options. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, shares, “Never has the threat of antimicrobial resistance been more immediate and the need for solutions more urgent.” Importantly, we need to ensure sustainable access to these treatments on a global scale.
