World Cancer Day
Today is world cancer day - a worldwide initiative to encourage everyone to work for equal access for life saving cancer treatment and care for all, no matter who they are or where they live. Globally, 1 in six deaths is due to cancer and about 70% of these deaths occur in low and middle income countries. The new number of cases is expected to increase more than 80% in low income countries, which is double the 40% rate in high income countries.
The Princess Margret Cancer Center has launched a new program aimed at closing the disparity in access to cancer treatment throughout the world. The program has three fundamental objectives including, making cancer care more available to patients and their families, training the next generation of cancer leaders and becoming an international hub for the world’s leading research on the economic, social and other conditions that influence cancer care.
It will take a committed global community to come together and unite around this challenge and we at GMI hope for you to consider how you can get involved with this initiative as you move forward in your career in pharmacy.
